Research and Development Cell (R&D Cell)
Introduction
The Research and Development (R&D) Cell of Jayalakshmi Institute of Technology (JIT) has been established to promote a vibrant research culture among faculty members and students. The Cell aims to encourage research in emerging and challenging areas of Engineering, Technology, Science and Humanities, including multidisciplinary domains.
The R&D Cell facilitates an environment that nurtures innovation, critical thinking and scientific inquiry. It motivates faculty members and students to undertake research projects, publish research papers in reputed journals and participate in conferences, seminars, workshops and project competitions. Through these activities, the Cell enhances the research capabilities of budding technocrats and contributes to the academic and technological advancement of the institution.
The Cell also supports faculty members in securing external research funding, establishing collaborations with industries and research organizations and pursuing doctoral research (Ph.D.) to strengthen the academic and research ecosystem of the institution.
Objectives
- To create awareness and provide opportunities for Research and Development activities among students and faculty members and to foster a strong research culture in every department.
- To encourage faculty members to undertake funded research projects and enhance their academic qualifications by registering for Ph.D. programmes.
- To motivate faculty members to actively engage in research activities in their respective areas of specialization.
- To encourage faculty members and students to publish research papers in reputed National and International Journals and Conferences.
- To promote research activities among faculty members across Engineering, Science, and Humanities disciplines for their professional development.
- To guide and support students in applying for research funding under student project schemes from various funding agencies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI (India)], as well as projects funded by industries and corporate organizations, and other Government and Non-Government research funding agencies.
- To assist faculty members in obtaining financial support for organizing Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, and Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) from various funding agencies.
- To facilitate the growth of research activities by developing appropriate mechanisms, targets, and monitoring systems.
- To develop strategies that enhance faculty success in obtaining external research funding.
- To disseminate updated information on research policies, funding opportunities and initiatives from government bodies, industries, and professional organizations.
- To promote research collaborations within the institution and with other academic institutions, industries and research organizations.
- To coordinate with departments to identify interdisciplinary research priorities.
- To strengthen industry–institute interaction in research-related activities.
- To organize research workshops, seminars and faculty development activities to improve research capabilities.
- To encourage activities that attract high-quality research scholars and postgraduate researchers.
- To maintain strong collaborations with government departments, industries, professional bodies and research organizations relevant to institutional research activities.
Implementation of Research Promotion Policy
In order to strengthen the activities carried out under the R&D Cell, the institution has decided to revise and implement the Research Promotion Policy. As part of this initiative, a committee comprising senior faculty members and Heads of Departments has been constituted to coordinate and monitor research and development activities across all departments.
The Academic Council of Jayalakshmi Institute of Technology has approved the committee members to implement and monitor the research promotion initiatives for the Academic Year 2025–2026.
The R&D Cell will work systematically to enhance research output, funded projects, publications, patents and collaborative research activities, thereby contributing to the academic excellence and innovation ecosystem of the institution.
Roles and Responsibilities of R&D Cell Members
The Research and Development (R&D) Cell plays a vital role in promoting research culture, innovation and academic excellence in the institution. The following roles and responsibilities are assigned to the members of the R&D Cell to effectively coordinate and monitor research activities across departments.
1. Chairman / Principal
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for research activities in the institution.
- Approve research policies, research promotion schemes and institutional research initiatives.
- Encourage faculty members to undertake funded research projects and consultancy activities.
- Facilitate collaboration with industries, research organizations and government agencies.
- Review and monitor the progress of research activities in the institution.
2. R&D Coordinator
- Coordinate the overall functioning of the Research and Development Cell.
- Identify research opportunities and communicate funding schemes from various agencies namely AICTE, DST, DRDO, TNSCST, SERB, etc.
- Motivate faculty members to apply for funded research projects, patents and consultancy works.
- Organize workshops, seminars and Faculty Development Programs related to research.
- Maintain records of publications, funded projects, patents and research activities of faculty members.
- Submit periodic reports of research activities to the Principal and Academic Council.
3. Department R&D Coordinators / Heads of Departments
- Promote research culture within their respective departments.
- Encourage faculty members to pursue Ph.D. programmes and research activities.
- Monitor research publications, project proposals and patent filing by department faculty.
- Identify interdisciplinary research areas and collaborative opportunities.
- Assist faculty members in preparing and submitting research proposals to funding agencies.
- Review departmental research progress periodically.
4. Faculty Members
- Undertake research activities in their area of specialization.
- Publish research papers in reputed National and International Journals and Conferences.
- Apply for funded research projects and consultancy assignments.
- Guide students in research-based projects, innovation competitions, and paper presentations.
- Participate in workshops, seminars, and training programmes related to research.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives.
5. Student Representatives / Research Scholars
- Participate actively in research projects, project competitions, and technical paper presentations.
- Assist faculty members in research activities and innovation projects.
- Apply for student research funding schemes such as TNSCST Student Projects Scheme.
- Promote research awareness among fellow students.
6. R&D Cell Members
- Support the implementation of research policies and research promotion initiatives.
- Assist in organizing seminars, workshops, conferences, and research events.
- Maintain research documentation required for NAAC, NBA, and other accreditation processes.
- Encourage collaboration with industries and research organizations.
- Monitor the progress of research activities in departments.
